(5 Pack) R. Esterbrook & Co. Vintage Calligraphy Pen Nibs - #756 School Firm

The R. Esterbrook & Co. #756 School Firm (often labeled as the "School Fine Oval") is a specialized writing tool that was a staple of the American classroom during the mid-20th century. Produced primarily in the 1940s, this nib was engineered for high-volume, reliable performance in educational settings. Its defining feature is the "Oval" point—a convex, pressed shape at the very tip that creates a smooth, rounded contact point with the paper. Unlike sharp-pointed calligraphy nibs that can snag on fibrous paper, the #756 was designed to glide effortlessly, making it an ideal "workhorse" for students learning to maintain consistent line weights in their daily lessons.
In modern use, the #756 is highly valued by artists and hand-letterers for its "mono-width" writing capability, meaning it produces a line of uniform thickness regardless of the direction of the stroke. As a "firm" nib, it offers almost no flexibility, providing a rigid and stable feel that is excellent for technical drawing, architectural notation, or monoline scripts like Spencerian Ladies' hand. These authentic New Old Stock (NOS) nibs are typically finished in a classic gray steel and, like all vintage Esterbrooks, feature a factory-applied lacquer to prevent rust. This coating must be removed by dipping the nib in ink and wiping it clean several times before the ink will flow evenly for your first project.
