A rare and exquisite artifact from the Byzantine Empire, this bronze reliquary cross dates from early to late Medieval period, between the 8th and 12th centuries AD, with some similar examples traced as far back as the 5th century. The cross bears the sacred Greek inscription "IC XC", which means Jesus Christ & "MP OY", which means Mother of God, in referece to the Virgin Mary who holds a revered position within Christendom. These abbreviations are often found in icons of Jesus and Mary. This early Christian artifact is a beautiful symbol of faith and reflects the historical importance of the early Church.
