This narrative is pieced together across three eras by a trio of premier Greek historians: Eusebius Pamphilus, the "Father of Ecclesiastical History" who walked alongside Constantine; Socrates Scholasticus, a Constantinople lawyer tracking the violent Arian controversies; and Evagrius Scholasticus, a Syrian legal advisor detailing the massive geopolitical shocks of the Nestorian crisis, earthquakes, and Persian invasions.
These foundational texts survived for centuries scattered across monastic scriptoriums and imperial libraries in the Christian East. They were eventually rescued, preserved, and structurally contextualized during the Renaissance. The brilliant 17th-century French scholar Henricus Valesius (Henri Valois) meticulously collected, compared, and translated these original Greek manuscripts into Latin. He published his landmark academic editions in Paris between 1659 and 1673. This 1709 English volume is a direct translation of Valesius’s monumental Latin edition. Printed by Awnsham and John Churchill in London, it features Valesius’s thorough explanatory notes printed right in the margins. These notes helped 18th-century readers understand the chaotic, complex history of the early Church.
