1803 King James New Testament Bible - (Jane Bliss)

A charming and highly personal early nineteenth-century pocket Bible, comprising The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ together with The Psalms of David in Metre, printed at Edinburgh in 1803 by Sir D. Hunter Blair and J. Bruce, Printers to His Majesty. Bound in contemporary dark red calf, the upper cover gilt-lettered “JANE BLISS”, indicating ownership and suggesting the volume was commissioned or presented specifically for its original owner.

Personalized bindings of this nature provide an intimate connection to their original owners and offer valuable insight into private religious life in the years following the turn of the nineteenth century. The survival of the gilt ownership inscription is particularly appealing, transforming the volume from a standard printed Bible into a tangible record of individual identity.

The Condition: Contemporary calf binding worn with rubbing and loss to the spine extremities; hinges and inner joints showing evidence of age and use. Contents toned with scattered foxing and staining, several leaves with marginal wear and small losses not affecting legibility. Overall, an attractive and evocative survival, retaining strong historical presence and considerable charm.

Provenance:
Jane Bliss, original owner, her name gilt-stamped to the upper cover.

The gilt ownership inscription “Jane Bliss” possesses a strikingly evocative quality, lending the volume an almost literary character. The surname Bliss carries multiple meanings within the English language, signifying joy, contentment, and spiritual happiness, creating an intriguing contrast with the ordinary simplicity of the Christian name Jane. Such a combination has an almost theatrical resonance, sounding more like the heroine of a nineteenth-century novel than a historical individual. There is also a subtle irony in the name, for life in the early nineteenth century was often marked by hardship and uncertainty, making the promise of “bliss” both poignant and aspirational. This interplay becomes all the more compelling when paired with the Bible's unusually rich blood-red leather binding: a colour traditionally associated with passion, sacrifice, and devotion, which stands in vivid contrast to the serene implications of the owner's surname. From a historical perspective, the survival of so personalized and visually distinctive an object transforms it from a simple devotional book into a fascinating artifact of identity, sentiment, and the culture of naming in the early nineteenth century.
