"Gulliver's Travels" (Second Edition) Jonathan Swift, 1727

Gulliver’s Travels follows the voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship’s surgeon who encounters four distinct civilizations that challenge his perception of humanity. He first visits Lilliput, where he is a giant among six-inch-tall people consumed by petty political rivalries, and then Brobdingnag, where he is a tiny plaything for giants who view European society as primitive. His later travels take him to the flying island of Laputa, a satire on impractical science, and finally to the land of the Houyhnhnms, noble talking horses who rule over the Yahoos—degraded, animalistic humans. By the end, Gulliver is so repulsed by human nature that he can no longer bear the company of his own family.

Historically, the book served as a devastating political and social satire of 18th-century England and the Enlightenment. Swift used the miniature Lilliputians to mock the absurd disputes between the Whigs and Tories and the religious conflicts of the era. By stripping away the "grandeur" of European institutions and viewing them through the eyes of outsiders, Swift attacked the human ego and the belief that reason alone could solve the flaws of society. Its publication was so controversial that its first printer censored parts of the text to avoid being charged with treason.
Beyond its immediate political context, the 1727 edition solidified the book as a foundational work of modern English literature. While often simplified today as a children's adventure story, it is a masterclass in Menippean satire, using a fictional travelogue to critique the very nature of truth and perspective. It influenced centuries of literature, from the development of the novel to the roots of science fiction, and coined the term "Yahoo," which remains a permanent part of the English lexicon to describe a crude or materialistic person.

We provide detailed photographs to allow you to assess the book's condition and aesthetic appeal. Many, if not all, of the early books and Bibles we offer will show signs of aging, whether it's foxing on the pages, dog-eared or chipped corners, inscriptions from previous owners, or staining from years of use.

Condition: These books have all 4 boards detached. They remain in an early style binding and appear to possibly have been re-backed at some point in their history. The pages themselves are quite crisp and beautiful. We are hesitant to perform any repairs to them as they hold true as a genuine artifact of a very rare and precious English Masterwork.
