Heart Shield Bible - "National Edition - The New Testament" The Gideons, 1943 (World War II)
A rare piece of wartime history, The National Edition of the New Testament was issued to soldiers during World War II, these Bibles feature a unique bullet shield, crafted from sturdy brass, that protected many servicemen in the heat of battle. This artifact not only offered spiritual solace but also literally saved lives, standing as a testament to the resilience and faith of its bearers.
Our research shows that a Theodore O. Hayes (possibly this Theodore Hayes) volunteered for service at 23 years if age. Hayes was a member of the newly formed 91st Bomb Group. The 323rd Bomb Squadron flew to England in September 1942. Hayes served as a second lieutenant, and supervised flights as a co-pilot. The 323rd Bomb Squadron flew over 340 missions, and returned to the US in 1947.
At Book Archaeology, we honor such remarkable relics, inviting you to connect with a legacy of courage and devotion.
