"Personal Memoirs of P. H. Sheridan" Gen. P. H. Sheridan, 1888 - 91

2 Volume Set / 1891 (Vol. 1) & 1888 (Vol. 2- First Edition)

It is a mixed set, but this pair has been together since at least 1896, as both volumes have the same lovely inscription. Presentation in ink in fronts of each volume reads "To Capt. Charles Fenton from C.H. & C.E. Covell. In memory of our pleasant visit with your family in July.   |   Dec. 25, 1896".

Very possibly this is Civil War Captain Charles Fenton (Mansfield, CT: 1840-1921) of the 21st CT Infantry. Commanding Co.F, he fought in the battles of Fredericksburg, Drury's Bluff, Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor, Bethesda Church, Petersburg Campaign, Chaffin's Farm, Fair Oaks and Richmond. He mustered out in June 1865 and returned to his home at Mansfield, CT, where he was a silk thread and cloth manufacturer. An archive of Capt. Fenton's Civil War items was auctioned off about 5 years ago in Ashland, Massachusetts area.

Embark on a historical journey with "Personal Memoirs of P. H. Sheridan" by Gen. P. H. Sheridan, published in 1891. Delve into the firsthand accounts of one of America's most distinguished Civil War generals, offering rich insights into the battles and strategies that shaped a nation. Gen. Sheridan's articulate recounting of his military career provides a unique perspective, both personal and profound. Explore his experiences from the Shenandoah Valley campaigns to his pivotal role at the Battle of Five Forks, which ultimately led to the defeat of General Lee's army. Gen. Philip Henry Sheridan, known for his aggressive and fearless tactics, was a key figure in the Union Army. Born in 1831, he graduated from West Point and quickly rose through the ranks. His memoirs shed light not only on the military maneuvers but also on his interactions with other prominent leaders like Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman. Sheridan's post-war career also saw him playing significant roles in the Reconstruction era and the establishment of Yellowstone National Park.

Detailed Condition: Even though this is a mixed 1888/91 set, it is in about as good a condition as you will find. The exterior binding with only light wear and strong, unfaded, covers and spines with still bright gilding. A bump spot on outer edge of front cover of V.1 (see photo). Other than the ink gift inscriptions (my photos show both inscriptions), the only other writing in book I noticed are some partially erased pencil notations with price notation in corners of front patterned end papers in each volume. Interior pages are very clean and crisp looking with foldout battlefield maps intact (the large fold-out map with a tear line near where it is attached to book- see close-up photo). The only "flaw" I notice to interiors is some tearing along inner edge of front end paper in Vol.2 (see photo), and a much shorter tear along same inner edge of Vol.1. Texts and binding still attached well together. A fabulous set.
