Limestone Egyptian Ushabti (Pharaonic BC)

Egyptian ushabti statues were often placed in tombs. Such statues were believed to act as servants in the afterlife, performing tasks for the individual in the realm of the dead. Limestone was often associated with purity and eternity, aligning with the Egyptians' spiritual beliefs and focus on the afterlife. Its use in tombs and funerary items symbolized a connection to the divine and the eternal journey of the soul. Limestone was one of the most popular and significant materials in ancient Egypt due to its abundance and versatility. It was widely used for constructing temples, pyramids, and tombs, as well as for crafting statues and artifacts like Ushabtis.

Initially conceived during the Middle Kingdom (2040-1782 BC), ushabtis evolved over centuries into detailed and personalized representations of servants. Their use continued into the Late Period (664-332 BC) and began to decline with the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great.
